To practice my professional networking, I attended the kick off event for the Chatham University Marketing Club back at the beginning of the semester. I decided to go to this event because I am a marketing major and I thought that it would be beneficial to go to this event to meet more people who have similar interests as myself. The speaker that spoke at this meeting was Courtney Noal. Courtney is the president of the Chatham Marketing Association and told all off the attendees what to expect as a member of CMA. Courtney talked about the role of marketing in the world and how all of us as future marketers need to fulfill our role. She told all of us that the faculty advisor of the Chatham Marketing Association is Dr. DeLong. Dr. DeLong is the assistant professor of marketing at Chatham University.

In class we throughly talked about marketing and its role in the business field. We had multiple guest speakers come in and talk about their role in the marketing field. The guest speakers that we had come into class were, Dr. Debbie DeLong, Dr. Michelle Price, and Joziah Council. We learned that the definition of marketing is, the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large (Collins). In the textbook we also learned what the four P's of marketing are, product, price, place, promotion (Collins). The marketing mix often refers to the four P's of marketing also (Collins).

In the current business news regarding marketing, Black Friday was a recent date that involves a lot of marketing techniques. Businesses try to suck in consumers to their stores with great deals, coupons, and door-busters. These techniques work because prices are so low and consumers have a desire to go out and buy items at a great discounted rate. Marketing techniques are used in many ways to bring in consumers. There are adds, social media posts, television commercials, emails, text messages, coupons sent in the mail, and so many more ways to get consumers to come to the store. During Courtney's presentation I learned that marketing tactics change depending on what the producer is trying to provide to the consumer. In the case of Black Friday, businesses used lots of marketing techniques to reach the largest audience that they could.

The article that I read on Think with Google was called, Inside Google Marketing: What we learned from the Pixel 3 launch. In the article it talked about how data is a marketers best friend. This statement is something that Courtney brought up during the kickoff event. Marketing is about getting and producing what the consumer desires. With this being said, it is necessary to gather data to figure out what the consumer wants and desires. A quote from the article that I read said," Dreaming has become lost a little bit in our industry, because of the amount of data we have," says Jabari Hearn, global integrated marketing director at Google. "Every day I try to inspire my team to dream, and thats an important piece if you want to take consumers someplace new." Consumer needs and wants are ever changing and people in the marketing field need have to have creativity and adaptivity when trying to meet the changing needs of consumers.
